Lawn care may seem simple for some and something quite difficult for others, especially when they don’t know where to begin. There are a few common lawn care tips and needs that everyone should know in order to start and keep up a healthy outdoor area for a happy home.
Preparing the Soil
First and foremost, the soil must be prepared to have the best success in growth. Loosen the soil with a hoe or tiller to break up clumps and to mix up the nutrients. This will also give you a better idea of the condition of the soil. If the clay or sand concentrations are too high, you will need to add organic matter to create something more ideal for healthy growth and easier lawn care.
Fertilizing
Fertilize the soil using compost or other organic matter like manure. Continue to till the soil to mix it in well. The fertilizer will create a rich soil base that’s ideal for healthy lawns.
There are several different fertilizer options and some are even specialized for the type of grass that you have or grass seeds that you would like to plant. Some types of grass require little lawn care while others may need a little more love to grow well.Once everything is mixed well, use a hoe or rake to even out the surface for a level area that will be ready for seeding.
Seeding
It’s important to spread the seeds evenly over the entire open surface of the lawn. In order to do this, you can lightly sprinkle a handful of seeds as you walk over the lawn or you can use a seed spreader that will have the work done faster.
To spread as evenly as possible, fill the seed spreader 1/4 to 1/3 of the way and go over the entire surface. When you’ve done one round, fill the seed spreader again and move in a different direction over the entire lawn. Continue to do this for full and even coverage that will leave you with less lawn care requirements for healthy looking grass.
Watering
Watering right after seeding is very important for germination to begin. Without it, you would have done a lot of work for nothing. Use a light spray over the entire lawn, making sure not to soak the soil too much. Continue to water regularly until the first sprouts begin to show.
Once the lawn is growing nicely, you can reduce the number of times it’s watered, although depending on the weather, some lawns will need more watering than others.
For shady areas, there is little water required while very sunny spots and areas around trees will need a lot more for good moisture. One great lawn care tip is to mulch since it helps keep the soil moist and keep weeds at bay.
Mowing
Grass should be left at a height of 6 to 7cm; anything shorter than that height can put it in danger of drought or leave it vulnerable to disease and insects, which will require more lawn care.
Always mow the lawn in late afternoon or early evening when it’s dry. This will help it cut easily without damaging the blades and keep the moisture locked in.
