Although, prices have come down quite a lot in the past fifteen years so it can definitely be worth the time and effort involved when comparing the costs of carbon steel to wood.

Wood
Benefits: The benefits derived from using wood as a building material include the following. Wood require less energy to produce while also releasing less pollution. Wood is easy to recycle and can be gotten from sustainable and/or renewable resources so as not to help counteract the destruction of trees. This means that the popularity of tree farms is growing as this is considered to be a sustainable way to harvest the wood from trees without making any additional negative impacts to our forests.

Drawbacks: The drawbacks derived from using wood as a building material are many and include the following. A residential home is said to use anywhere between forty and fifty trees to construct, and since there is a focus on trees and their looming scarcity the use of wood is beginning to become an issue as other more sustainable resources are explored. Also, some woods must be treated before using and many of these treatments contain toxins. Expect to waste about 50 cubic feet of material, etc. when choosing to use wood for your project.
